Effective Programs for Marijuana Addiction
Marijuana (Cannabis) is the most used illicit drug in the nation. The short-term effects of marijuana include problems with memory and learning, distorted perception, difficulty in thinking and problem-solving and loss of coordination. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), among young people, heavy cannabis use is often associated with cognitive problems and an increased risk of mental illness.
The 2013 National Survey of Drug Use and Health Data reported that 7.1% of adolescents between the ages of 12 to 17 reported using marijuana.
New Research-Based Marijuana Treatment Program for Adolescents
Do you know an adolescent who has a problem with cannabis/marijuana?
Mountain Manor is pleased to announce exciting new treatment for adolescents with problematic marijuana use. As part of a study in collaboration with Dartmouth University at our Mountain Manor Baltimore program, we will begin offering a unique research-based approach to marijuana use disorders based on contingency management and working memory training. Contingency management (or motivational incentives) is a treatment that offers rewards for results. In this study all participants will be given monetary rewards for negative urine drug tests. Parents will also be given incentives for participating and learning a method for rewarding positive behaviors at home. Additionally, half of the participants will be randomly assigned to do training with a computer program that strengthens working memory, a cognitive function that has been implicated in substance use disorders.
Adolescents (ages 13-17) who enroll with a parent (or other guardian) for treatment for excessive marijuana/cannabis use at Mountain Manor are eligible.
Synthetic Cannabinoids – “K2” “Spice”
Synthetic cannabinoids are commonly known as “synthetic marijuana,” “K2,” or “Spice.” They are often sold in legal retail outlets at “herbal incense” or “potpourri” and are most popular among young people. To mask their intended purposes and avoid Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulatory oversight, synthetic drugs are labeled “not for human consumption.”
In 2012, 11.3% of high school seniors reported using synthetic marijuana in the past year. Synthetic cannabinoids are extremely dangerous and abusers who have been taken to the poison control centers report symptoms that include rapid heartbeat, vomiting, agitation, confusion, and hallucinations. Synthetic cannabinoids can also raise blood pressure and cause reduced blood supply to the heart and in a few cases, it has been associated with heart attacks (National Institute on Drug Abuse).
